Kevin Hickman

Kevin Hickman started playing cornet in the Fielding Junior Band in 1978. In 1984, he joined the Tenderkist Wanganui Band under the baton of Kevin Jarrett. In 1990, he moved to London and spent 3 years playing in the Hillingdon Band under Phillip Sparke. 

He returned to New Zealand in 1994 and joined the Woolston Brass Band and was the Principal Cornet of that band for 19 years. During this time, the band won 10 New Zealand A Grade titles. He has been a member of two New Zealand National Youth Bands and seven National Bands of New Zealand, four of them as Assistant Principal Cornet and two on Flugel Horn.

As a cornet soloist, he has won the New Zealand Junior Champion of Champions, the Australian Junior Cornet Championship, the New Zealand Amateur Cornet title and the New Zealand Championship Cornet title. In the last few years, he has won bot the New Zealand and Australian Open Flugel Championship and has won both the New Zealand and Australian Champion of Champions titles. He has also won the Federation of Australasian Brass Bands Aria contest and the New Zealand Invitation Slow Melody contest. He has also been part of many winning New Zealand duet and ensemble titles.

In 2010, he joined the New Zealand Army Band as a full-time musician and is currently the Drum Major of that band. He is also on the Solo Cornet section for the champion New Zealand band, Wellington Brass.
